Jamie Roberts back with a bang for Cardiff Blues

JAMIE ROBERTS scored his first try for the Blues in 28 months as they secured a hard-fought bonus-point victory over Treviso in the RaboDirect Pro12 at Cardiff Arms Park last night.

It was centre Roberts’ first start for the Blues since having knee surgery five months ago and his first score for them since the Amlin Challenge Cup final triumph over Toulon on May 23, 2010.

During those intervening years, Roberts has made just 18 appearances for them due to a combination of Wales commitments and injuries.

But he wants to put down an early marker this season with British and Irish Lions selection for the end-of-season tour of Australia up for grabs.

Roberts was voted player of the 2009 trip to South Africa, where he formed a quality centre partnership with Ireland great Brian O’Driscoll, and he showed glimpses of his power and finesse against Treviso.

The Italian outfit never gave up and it wasn’t until the final minute that replacement prop Campese Ma’afu got the Blues’ fourth try to secure a potentially precious bonus point.

A decent crowd of 8,133 went home happy with the endeavour and desire to play by the Blues as they consolidated their position in the upper reaches of the Pro12 table.
