Tom Varndell is enjoying the healthy competition at Wasps

The meteoric rise of Christian Wade has threatened Tom Varndell's traditional position at the top of the London Wasps try chart - and the 27-year-old winger admits he is in a battle during this season's Aviva Premiership.

Varndell finished top try scorer for Wasps in each of his first two seasons with the club although injury curtailed last season despite a great start as he missed a large chunk of the games and finished with three tries.

While the former England man was away from the team, Wade took the opportunity with both hands and raced to nine tries for the season to ensure his place as one of the hottest prospects in English rugby.

As both speedsters have been starting most games on opposite wings, Varndell is winning the try race in the Aviva Premiership so far with four to Wade's three and the former Leicester Tigers man is loving every second.

"We play really well with each other and have a good understanding which keeps the opposition guessing," he said.

"We get on really well of the pitch as well so it is brilliant and we have a little competition going on who will get the most tries."

"The back line is really exciting at the moment to play in and having new people like Stephen Jones in there keeps things improving."

"I am determined to get as many tries as possible and it is a great motivator for me to have him at my heels so I hope to keep scoring and getting some wins together."

"It really helps me play well and it is great to have that little bit of healthy competition in the ranks and especially when it is with your best mate."
